Mary Elton Primary School - Single Storey Building
North Somerset Council appointed Elliott Off-Site Building Solutions to design and build a new stand alone teaching block at Mary Elton School catering for pupils in the 4-11 age range.
The single storey building covers 650m² providing 6 new teaching spaces, staff room, administration offices and includes a covered walkway linking the new facility to the existing school. The building was designed to
reflect the adjacent residential properties and the original school building with regards to material choice, massing and window style.
The building was constructed using Elliott Off-Site’s structural timber wall panel system with brickwork elevations and concrete tiled roof. The use of natural daylight, ventilation and natural materials were maximised to create a series of spaces which createan enhanced learning environment. Sustainable and low energy measures were incorporated into the building and included condensing boilers, heat recovery units, PIR activated lighting and sunpipes.
The project was undertaken in a live school environment on a restricted site with limited access. The key to the success of this project was the relationship developed with the school to ensure that the sequencing and timing of the works was carried out to minimise disruption. The project was completed 5 weeks ahead of programme and within budget to a very high standard.
The children are very proud of their bespoke facility. Head of Mary Elton School, Owen James, commented that ‘The whole experience has been very positive and has impressed the local community’.
