BREEAM Award School Building - Taunton

Elliott Off-Site Building Solutions has achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating on a single storey classroom block at Oake and Bradford County Primary School in Taunton, Somerset. The timber-frame building consists of five classrooms, along with a new headmaster’s office, reception area and toilets.

The BREEAM ‘very good’ rating was achieved by incorporating a series of sustainable technologies including a Ground Source Heat Pump, a rainwater harvesting system, high levels of insulation, waste management and sustainable sourcing of materials.

The work was carried out in a live school environment and a key aspect of making this a success was the close working relationship that was nurtured with the school. This included involving the children and staff
with competitions and updates to help create ownership of the new classroom block from an early stage.

The exterior façade of the building was clad with a combination of brickwork coursing and coloured render. The design allows maximum benefit to be gained from 80% natural daylight to rooms, including large south facing windows. The extended overhanging roof eaves prevent excessive solar gain and provide a pavilion-type shelter around the perimeter. Elliott Off-Site ompleted the project four weeks ahead of schedule.

“We had complete confidence that Elliott Off-Site Building Solutions would be able to meet the strict timescales on this project. This was based on the company’s track record of completing three other school developments for Somerset County Council. The new building looks absolutely stunning and has created a real sense of pride with our students.”
