School Building Extension - Harpenden
Elliott Off-Site Building Solutions was commissioned by Mace and Hertfordshire County Council, as part of a 5-year framework agreement, to design and build a new maths and music block at Roundwood Park School in
Harpenden.
The design development and detailed specification was taken over by Elliott Off-Site’s in-house design team and carried out with environmental sustainability as a core consideration. The chosen form of construction is inherently energy efficient.
The building construction is a hybrid system combining steel frame with cast in-situ concrete floors and Elliott Off-Site’s timber panel wall system. The building is ventilated using heat recovery units and photovoltaic panels were installed on the south elevation and solar collectors assist the electrical supply with sun cooled glazing being utilised on south facing elevations.
One of the main challenges the team faced was a very rapid construction phase of 32 weeks, which included the demolition of the existing modular classrooms.
Elliott Off-Site construction techniques were ideally suited to this project primarily for their sustainability credentials and speed of construction.
The contemporary design of the new building is defined by the distinctive roof structure and irregular shaped windows which combined with the bright internal spaces enhance the buildings performance.
“We are immensely proud of the finished school which was developed in a good partnership spirit, which was a testament to the entire team”.
Nick Daymond, Head of Roundwood Park School
