Royal Gwent Hospital - Library Building
Gwent Healthcare NHS Trust appointed Elliott Off-Site Building Solutions to design and build a new 2-storey building to house the medical illustrations and undergraduate library services at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, South Wales.
The new building was constructed on a sloping and constrained site in the existing grounds of the District General Hospital. The principal challenge faced by Elliott Off-Site was working with a multitude of stakeholders to coordinate the construction phase to avoid disruption to the hospital operations.
The building covers 850m2 constructed over two floors using a hybrid system of steel frame in combination with Elliott Off-Site’s timber wall panel system and incorporates a concrete ground floor together with a high performance concrete and ribdeck upper floor.
The first floor accommodation for the medical illustrations department includes treatment rooms, photography and illustration studio, computer suite, retinal treatment room and kitchen together with a reception and waiting area. The ground floor under-graduate library includes a controlled entrance/lobby, a 24 hour library, computer suite, clinical skills teaching room, seminar room and a common room.
The project was designed to comply with Health Technical Memoranda and included BMS control and CCTV systems linked to existing site systems, together with heat recovery ventilation systems, gas condensing boilers, solar water panels and CO2 monitors.
This was a very logistically challenging project that Elliott Off-Site delivered ahead of programme and within budget.
