Valentines High School – Sixth Form Building
At Valentines High School in Ilford a new sixth form centre has been added to the existing High School to provide a stand alone facility. The centre, which has striking external elevations using cantilevered features and extensive external works, covers 1940m² and provides eight classrooms, group rooms, library, careers room, administration and training rooms together with a common room for students.
The building was constructed over two floors using a hybrid system of a steel frame in combination with Elliott Off-Site Building Solutions’s timber wall panel system, with concrete ground floor together with a high performance concrete and ribdeck upper floor. The external elevation consists of brick and cedar board cladding with a Sarnafil single ply membrane and steel composite roof panels.
The main challenge faced by Elliott Off-Site was coordinating the works to minimise any disruption to the operation of the live school environment. With restricted and limited access this proved to be a very challenging project to deliver with a programme phased around school timetables to minimise noise impact.
One of the primary objectives of the project was to incorporate a high number of sustainable and low energy features into the building which included ground source heat pumps, solar panels, wind catchers, sunpipes, sun catchers, rain water harvesting and high performance condensing boilers.
The project was delivered within budget, to a high standard and four weeks ahead of programme by working in partnership with the school, successfully adding to our portfolio of Education sector projects.
