Heathrow T2 – Welfare accommodation

Main Drivers/Constraints

The purpose of this building was to provide initial welfare facilities during the ‘start up’ phase of the Terminal 2 demolition and re-build, providing superior workforce facilities in an exceptionally short space of time.

Elliott worked very hard from initial enquiry stage through to completion on site, understanding the clients required hand over date from day one, identifying key milestones for contract signing, design freeze and arrival on site to ensure these dates were met.

The client wanted to work with a supplier who was fully aware of the particular restrictions,
with both logistical and security issues being of prime concern along with fire safety, requiring regular liaison with fire officers to satisfy these concerns.

Project Information

The 2 storey office and welfare facilities building used at Terminal 2, Heathrow is Fully compliant to BAA requirements and building regulations.

Features include:

  • Kitchen facility to provide 24 hour facilities during the construction start up period
  • Canteen seating to accommodate 400 people over 3 covers for each meal
  • Male and female locker rooms – split as identified by HETCo
  • Cold room and freezer room
  • Separate locker / changing facilities for canteen operatives

Benefits Achieved/Key Features

  • Working closely with BAA. The restrictions of delivering through the tunnel only during the night time could be lifted to minimise the amount of time required for module installation.
  • BAA agreement meant our site crews were already security cleared for working on these sensitive sites and again minimising delays for temporary passes to be issued on a daily basis.
  • With the design phase being limited the client requested a number of changes during the installation and fit out phase, these were efficiently managed by the project manager dedicated to working on BAA sites.
