National Apprenticeship Week runs from the 9th of March 2018 but our Elliott Apprentices work year round as part of our nationwide team.

We wanted to take this opportunity, however, to meet some of our apprentices and ask them how they feel about being an apprentice and celebrate their success with Elliott together.

Connor Merry – Internal Sales Executive Apprentice

Tell me about your Apprenticeship at Elliott.
The apprenticeship that I am currently undertaking is Customer Service Practitioner Level 2 Qualification, this scheme is made up of 65% being my Apprentice Showcase which is a document that should include all of my work over the 12 – 15 months. 20% of it is made up of a practical observation, this is a onetime hour long meeting with my assessor where they observe what it is I do in my regular work day. 15% is made up of a Professional Discussion, this is a onetime hour long meeting with my assessor where they would ask me questions about my role and the many different aspects of it. Currently during my week I spend 80% of my time (4 days) performing the regular ISE role, with there being no difference in what I do in comparison to my colleagues. I spend the other 20% of my time (1 Day) focusing solely on my apprenticeship work, completing any tasks given to me that count towards my showcase and preparing for any meetings I may have coming up. As part of my apprenticeship scheme I have a monthly meeting with my tutor Tracey, in which we spend an hour or two going over how I am doing, what I can improve upon and in order to set goals for me to complete prior to my next meeting.

What role would you like to be in the future? Do you think your Apprenticeship will help you get there?
In the future once I finish my apprenticeship scheme I would ideally like to transition into an ISE role within Elliott’s, this is something that I feel the apprenticeship will help towards as I spend 80% of my time performing the role anyway. Not only this, but the work that I complete for my apprenticeship helps considerably towards working in customer service, and outlines how I should act when dealing with customers over the phone.

Why do you like working for Elliott?
I like working for Elliott as it is a company that values its employees very highly, and since joining the team in the Nuneaton office I have felt very welcome and have gotten on with everyone extremely well. Not only this but it is a very successful company within its industry, and there are plenty of routes that I can go down in the future when it comes to different job role opportunities.

What’s the best thing about being an apprentice?
The best thing about being an apprentice is the fact that I am always learning, and that as I am still young I am always eager to try new things which this apprenticeship presents to me. Something else that an apprenticeship offers that University does not is the fact that you earn whilst learning, which helps me a great deal when it comes to budgeting and handling my finances at a young age, this is something that you can’t really get by doing anything other than an apprenticeship.

Would you recommend apprenticeship to your friends, why or why not?
Yes I would and have recommended apprenticeships to my friends, primarily for the reasons listed above when it comes to earning whilst learning. But this is not the only reason as to why I would recommend it, another reason has to be the responsibility and pressure that comes with having targets set for me to achieve. This is something that I feel only an apprenticeship can offer, whilst also getting some experience in the workplace and exactly what having a full time job entails whilst still learning new things every day.
