It’s important for us at Elliott to take the time to help grow future talent. We’ve invested time into growing our apprenticeship scheme, working with the National Apprenticeship Scheme, to bring in new talented team members.

The job market is more competitive than ever, which means developing marketable skills has never been more relevant. University or college isn’t for everyone, so with an Apprenticeship scheme, you can earn while you learn and gain recognised qualifications.

We sat down with our new Buyer, Shaun Rootham to find out about his apprenticeship experience and how it helped him get his job at Elliott.

What was the length of your Apprenticeship scheme and where was your placement?

My Apprenticeship was 2 years and I completed it at Perkins.

What was the subject of your Apprenticeship?

My Apprenticeship was around the Supply Chain where I worked within 8 departments spending 3 months in each. Over the 2 years I gained experience in different departments which were:

  • Orders management
  • Material planning
  • Production planning
  • Credit control
  • Imports (manage border control)
  • Packaging
  • Dispatch planning
  • Supply chain overview

I also ran and managed projects from start to finish, performed a normal desk role as well as mentoring four new Apprentices, also on a national apprenticeship scheme, on a similar supply chain course.

What were the benefits of the Apprenticeship to you?

My Apprenticeship really helped me to understand the supply chain and everything that happens from start to finish, rather than having the exposure from only one department.

How has an Apprenticeship helped you to develop your career/ get the job you now have with Elliott?

The project side of my Apprenticeship helped me with time management, people skills, budgeting and people management. This also helped contribute to me thinking about what I wanted my 10-year career plan to look like.

Would you recommend an Apprenticeship to others?

Yes, I would definitely recommend an Apprenticeship scheme to others as you get good exposure to a business environment as well as gaining good experience and a qualification at the same time.

Apprenticeships are great for anyone who wants to take a practical approach to their learning whilst gaining experience for a specific career and having the opportunity to apply your skills immediately.

Elliott recruits Apprentices every year into various roles across the country, take a look at our careers page to find out more.
