Meet the women in construction
2018 marked the centenary of women gaining the right to vote in the UK. We have come a long way in this time across many industry sectors.
Yet, perhaps not surprisingly, women continue to be under-represented in the construction industry, making up just 14% of construction industry professionals.
We hear on the news that one in five businesses has never employed a female senior executive and half of all organisations claim that they have never employed a female manager. Additionally, the gender pay gap remains an inherent barrier across the construction industry.
We believe that there are many misconceptions about the roles women ‘can do’ or are ‘able to do’ in construction, coupled with insufficient information for women who are seeking employment in the sector.
At Elliott we are working hard to reverse this trend.
The demographic of site operatives and their roles is beginning to change. Women are diversifying their education and learning skills that are a necessity in construction work. Even personal protective equipment providers are extending their clothing ranges to accommodate female workers.
Elliott is extremely proud to engage with, and provide commentary from some of our female colleagues, all of whom add a wealth of experience and diversity to our organisation.
